Fieldtrip Feb. 27, 2014

5th Grade Program

The JA City 5th grade program combines in-class learning with a day-long visit to this fully-interactive simulated town facility. The program helps students connect the dots between what they learn in school and the real world. Through daily lessons, hands-on activities and active participation in running the City, students develop a strong understanding of the relationship between what they learn in school and their successful participation in a worldwide economy. During their day at JA City, students work as employees in various businesses (facilitated by volunteer educators and business professionals), they are paid for their labor and they manage personal checking accounts. Throughout the day, students also learn about time and money management skills as they work, bank and shop as consumers. Following their participation in the JA City simulation, students participate in debriefing lessons to ensure a well-rounded learning experience. These lessons allow students to reflect on their JA City experience and further identify the relevance of classroom learning to their future plans and goals. JA City helps prepare students for a lifetime of learning and academic achievement.

What is JA Biz Town?

We are EXCITED to be able to take our fifth grade students to JA City! We think that this will be an experience that they will remember their whole life. About four weeks before our fieldtrip, we will start learning about the business world and make resumes, interview for jobs, learn how to write checks and manage an account. It will be a great opportunity to start applying classroom learning to real life.

Parent Volunteers Needed: We will need about 30 parents to volunteer their time and expertise to help the kids run the various businesses. Our fieldtrip is scheduled for Feb. 27, 2014 so that parents can add that date to their planning calendar. We would love to have parents with all types of backgrounds. Unfortunately parents will not be able to take siblings with them when they volunteer, but we will also need parents to help us with the preparation of the fieldtrip by making things at home.

Cost:  The approximate cost of this fieldtrip is $900. We think that's a bargain for the experience that the kids will have and we are encouraging the kids to earn their own $5 donation. They have all summer to do extra jobs. We would also like to make it known that parents/businesses can make a donation for tax purposes. They can make a donation to the Jordan Education Foundation JEF specifically for Elk Meadows Fifth Grade.
